This decade can be a defining moment for humanity while we build the metaverse. To reflect that and to help anyone creating the various components of the metaverse, I would like to finish this website by sharing 10 guidelines, or principles, of the metaverse.
1 • Open: An open metaverse enables anyone to benefit from the metaverse by creating or sharing unique experiences and to easily move between the various worlds, taking your data, identity, and wearables easily from one platform to another. 2 • Inclusive: Anyone should be able to participate in the metaverse and form their own identity that best reflects their real-world identity. In the metaverse, anything goes, and no one should be excluded based on their physical or digital appearances. 3 • Private: Your life, your privacy. In the metaverse, anyone and anything should have complete custody over their or its data. Whether an individual, organization, or digital twin, data remains with the original creator, and no one should be allowed to collect, analyze, or abuse data without explicit consent. 4 • Transparent: No more legal fine print, but instead anyone should be able to understand the rules of engagement of any platform, virtual world, or augmented experience in easy-to-read terms. 5 • Fair: No exorbitant fees by platform owners, but a fair reward for fair work. No extraction of value but value creation. Those contributing most of the value should receive most rewards, ideally enabled by cryptocurrencies. 6 • Secure: Security should be part of the DNA of the metaverse, embedded in the code—secure by design. Data should be secure and encrypted, especially when it comes to sensitive biometrics data. 7 • Safe: The metaverse should be a safe environment, where nobody should be afraid to be harassed, bullied, or insulted. Safety measures should be built into the platforms and turned on by default to protect. Offenders should not be able to get away with their actions. 8 • Consensual: Similar to the physical world, consent should be common practice. Platforms should prevent that anyone can contact anyone, without asking for permission, and consent should be embedded in the code. 9 • Creative: The metaverse thrives on creativity and creators, and artists should be able to express themselves in whatever way they want as long as it does not harm others. Since the law of physics do not apply in the digital realm, out-of-the-box thinking should be rewarded. 10 • Community-centric: The metaverse is social, and the immersive internet can best be experienced together. From tiny niche communities to global communities exploring, playing, and working together, the metaverse should be built around creative collaboration. Ideally, anyone creating anything for the metaverse should check to what extent their platform, virtual world, or augmented experience complies with these guidelines. If we are able to create a metaverse for all, everyone will benefit, and humanity will thrive.
